£4.25 COUNCIL TAX REFUND NOT WORTH THE POSTAGE, SAYS TORY LEADER

by Alan Dean on 25 February, 2015

On the day that Conservative Sir Malcom Rifkind stood down after telling the BBC that he was worth far more than his MP’s salary of £67,060, the Conservative leader of Uttlesford District Council is quoted saying that a £4.25 Council Tax refund to all householders is not worth the postage. See this article from the Saffron Walden Reporter.

So Cllr Rolfe is prepared to send out Council Tax bills knocking off £8.58 for our wealthiest residents but only a cut of £2.86 from the least wealthy households’ bills. Yet he doesn’t think it’s worth the effort and postage to discount bills more fairly by £4.25 to all households, even though the cost to the council is the same and there will be no extra postage cost as the rebate would be deducted from everyone’s standard council tax bills.
