Elms Farm and other developments

by Alan Dean on 15 February, 2011

Elms Farm from Church Road, Stansted

The owners of Elms Farm and the surrounding landscaped land of Stansted Park are staging an exhibition on Saturday, February 26th. Their intention is to promote and consult the public about a medium sized housing development on the somewhat untidy farm site. They are conscious of the sensitivity of the site; for example, the view of the park from Chapel Hill. There are likely to be significant community benefits if the plan becomes reality.

One issue that will have to be considered is the impact of traffic on Church Road. Whether and when the road can be widened on both sides of the railway bridge

(popularly known as ‘Wing-mirror Bridge’ for obvious reasons) must not be ignored!

I think the same issue arises with the proposal for a

supermarket, health centre and flats on the car sales site immediately across the railway from Elms Farm. Land must be safeguarded on both sides of the bridge so that the pavement can be shifted and the road widened.

The bridge only was built to a wider specification when the railway was electrified many years ago. Today’s traffic, heavy lorries, buses and coaches are all aggravating the risk for cars and pedestrians crossing the bridge.

  1. […] I wrote in an earlier post, the widening of Church Road on both sides of the railway bridge needs to happen – as soon as […]

You seem to have come up with a solution to Church Road but what about Chapel Hill (the busiest road)? It is going to be a complete traffic NIGHTMARE if this development along with the health centre go ahead. The next thing a bypass will have to be created. Why can’t Chapel Hill be made ONE-WAY with parking kept for existing residents?

I have observed twice this week a logjam from Cambridge Road down to Recreation Ground taking several minutes to get moving. I wish here were an easy and acceptable solution. The problem with a one-way route is would be its great length via High Lane.
