STATEMENT OF COUNCIL’S COMMITMENT AGAINST RACIST DISCRIMINATION

by Alan Dean on 9 June, 2020

The Green and Liberal Democrat Members of Uttlesford District Council have proposed the following commitment for adoption by the Council – its Members of all political parties and its officers.

Uttlesford District Council’s Members and Officers are seriously concerned and distressed at the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis, USA two weeks ago.

They decry discrimination and injustice that still exists for Black, Asian and all minority ethnic communities, whether in Uttlesford, elsewhere in the UK, the USA or in other countries.

The Council affirms its condemnation of racism and of all forms of racially-based discrimination.

The Council condemns racial intolerance wherever it happens, and declares that it has no place in Uttlesford Council and Uttlesford District.

The Council invites Kemi Badenoch MP, as the Government’s Equalities Minister, to work with the Council to address all inequalities in this District, including those highlighted in the recently published public health report detailing the higher rates of infection and death of Black and other ethnic minority people from COVID-19.

The Council resolves to do all within its powers to ensure Uttlesford Council and District are inclusive and is a welcoming place to all people who live, work and visit us by reaching out to minorities within our community.

Council Members declare that, as community leaders they will set an example by adding their voices to those who say that Black Lives Matter. Members will strive to make this a reality.

The Council resolves to take action to identify and eliminate racial discrimination and to give support to Black and Ethnic Minority people who are subject to it. To that end, Uttlesford District Council will bring forward proposals to ensure that it acts against local racial discrimination.
