Have the Tories Blown It?

by Alan Dean on 7 August, 2012

It’s beginning to look like the Tories have blown their future; both nationally and locally. David Cameron seems to have lost control of his parliamentary party to maverick right-wingers who despise him for not winning an outright victory in 2010. They voted down reform of the House of Lords. Even moderate Tory MPs, perhaps with an eye on a lucrative retirement home, voted against the Bill being given a fair passage.

So they’ve broken the coalition agreement and now the Lib Dems won’t let them have another part of the bargain – fewer seats in the House of Commons. And that’s where the Tories have shot themselves in the foot. A revised Commons would have benefited the Tories more than Labour and the Lib Dems.

The public seems to be rumbling the Tories, according to this YouGov poll: http://t.co/2pudmvsx

So the Tories have voted to increase the chances of a Labour-led coalition from 2015. It’s the Right to Rule attitude of so many Tories that got them into this hole. They don’t believe in listening to the views of others. They  resent the need for coalition so much they’d sooner be in opposition.

It’s much the same here in Uttlesford. Born to Rule since May 2007. Trampled on anyone else’s opinion over new homes and where they should go. The Top-rulers even kept their own backbenchers in the dark.

The result is a public in revolt and unlikely to forget their behaviour once the impact of planning anarchy on this community really sinks in.

Oh for a little humility! Oh for a lesson in co-operation.
