Cost of university, cost of a home

by Alan Dean on 12 November, 2010

This week’s raging controversy over university fees, student demonstrations and riots disguises another charge by the older generation on the next. Opponents of higher education personal debt say this just adds to the burden of debt from a home mortgage. Yet the cost for buying a home will be several multiples higher than repaying a university education.

The coalition’s priorities should be to bring down the cost of housing. That can only be done by increasing supply to match or exceed demand. So far the coalition government’s plans have not delivered. This week Eric Pickles’ order to scrap house building targets Eric Pickleswas declared illegal in the courts. So far the coalition’s housing proposals have been based on populism rather than realism.

I see no reason why a well-earning graduate should not repay the cost of his or her university education; but I despair at homeowners who want to ration the supply of new homes for those without; making homes unavailable, unaffordable or a massive financial liability. Where are the demonstrators for fair homes?
