An Idea for Fixing Stansted’s Cambridge Road Chaos

by Alan Dean on 1 February, 2016

In recent weeks there has been continual public anger on Facebook/Stansted Matters at the traffic chaos and regular incidents of inconsiderate and dangerous parking close to the pedestrian crossing on Cambridge Road, Stansted.

Clicking here will reveal a possible and tentative plan for improving safety, parking and traffic congestion around Tesco and the Coop.

The plan requires a lot more work, negotiation and compromise but something like this is probably the only way possible to cut the chaos and address safety in a real way. The key features are:

  1. No traffic coming out of the existing derelict site behind Tesco. Only one way traffic into the site
  2. A land swap between the parish council and the owners of the derelict land to create a new car park and potential market area at 1 & 2 on the plan
  3. Disabled parking at 7
  4. A residential development on part of the existing public car park to fund the scheme at 3 on the plan
  5. Traffic would leave the sites via the existing car park area into Chapel Hill
  6. There is scope for other residential development with shops beneath at 4
  7. A space for delivery lorries to the stores at 6, though this seems improbable and is less essential with the elimination of outward traffic to Cambridge Road that cannot see oncoming vehicles because of large parked vehicles outside the Coop and Tesco and the provision of the new car park so near the shops.

Discussions have started on whether the three landowners, including the parish council, are willing to cooperate to make something along these lines work. This plan is only the start of a long discussion. It could make Cambridge Road a much better place to shop and do business.

Comments on whether you think this contains good ideas are welcomed on this blog or at cllrdean@uttlesford.gov.uk.

At long last, a serious attempt to tackle an increasingly serious problem – with a potentially very good solution. My only reservation would be the reduction in the total number of available public parking spaces but I guess there has to be some give and take.
